# Contacts

> Add a person so you can invite them to a Group.

Contacts is where you add a person so you can work with them. Click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, then **Settings**, then **Contacts**. Adding someone does not put them in a [Group](https://developers.webai.com/using-webai/groups.md).

> [card] Add a person
>
> Generate an invite, or paste one you received. They join Contacts when pairing finishes.

> [card] Invite them to a Group
>
> A Group Admin can add them under **Share** after they are in Contacts. Adding them here does not do that.

## Add a contact

**1. Open Contacts**

Click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, then **Settings**, then **Contacts**.

**2. Generate an invite**

Click **Add contact**, then **Generate invite**. Share the QR code, click **Copy invite link**, or click the email icon to send it. Each invite works for multiple people for 30 minutes. While it is live, **Requests** shows **Your invite is live** with a countdown. Click **Stop inviting** to cancel an unused invite, or **Show invite** to share it again.

**3. They pair with you**

The other person opens Contacts, clicks **Add contact**, pastes the link under **Paste an invite link**, and clicks **Pair**. Opening the invite link fills that field. They still click **Pair**. An invite sent straight to them shows under [Requests](https://developers.webai.com/settings/contacts.md#requests) instead.

**4. They are in Contacts**

They appear in your list with their name when pairing finishes. They are not in a Group until an Admin adds them from that Group under **Share**.

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Generate invite** and **Pair** need a network connection on the device that starts or accepts the invite. When the countdown ends, generate another invite.

## Requests

**Requests** appears at the top of Contacts when something is waiting. An invite someone sent you reads **Wants to add you as a contact**. Click **Accept** or **Decline**. After you accept, the row reads **Accepted, waiting for** that person **to finish pairing** until pairing completes, then they join Contacts. Declining removes the invite.

If your own invite runs out, **Requests** shows **Your invite expired**. Click **New invite** to make another.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Pairing uses webAI's peer-to-peer connection. It shares your IP address, which can show an approximate location, and your device's public identity, with the person you add. Connect with people you trust.

## People in Contacts

Contacts lists people you paired with. Connected Personas do not appear here. Find them on [Personas](https://developers.webai.com/using-webai/personas.md).

Each row shows their name and a status: **Online**, **Away**, **Busy**, or **Offline**. A row that says **Re-pair needed** needs a new invite. Generate one and pair again.

On the desktop app, the row also shows their IDN. Click it to copy it.

On the title row, open the filter and choose **Everyone**, **Online**, or **Offline**. **Away** and **Busy** still match **Online**. Click the search icon to open pop-up search and type a name.

> [!NOTE]
>
> If Contacts says it could not load your contacts, they are not gone. It keeps trying. **No contacts yet** means you have not added anyone.

## Remove a contact

**1. Open their options**

Open the options on their row.

**2. Remove them**

Click **Remove**, then confirm **Remove**. That drops the pairing, takes them off Contacts, and clears the conversation with them. Removals stay removed after a restart, and contacts added or deleted on another of your devices show up correctly everywhere. It does not remove them from a Group they already joined. You can pair again later.

## Common questions

> [accordion] How do I add someone as a contact?
>
> Click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, then **Settings**, then **Contacts**. Click **Add contact**, then **Generate invite** and share the QR code or link, or paste an invite you received and click **Pair**. Each invite works for multiple people for 30 minutes.

> [accordion] Why didn't my contact invite connect?
>
> Check **Requests** at the top of Contacts to accept or decline an invite you received. Generate or paste a new invite and try again if pairing did not finish. **Generate invite** and **Pair** need a network connection on the device that starts or accepts the invite. See [Requests](https://developers.webai.com/settings/contacts.md#requests).

> [accordion] What is Requests in Contacts?
>
> **Requests** appears when something is waiting: an invite someone sent you, or your own live invite. Click **Accept** or **Decline** on an invite. After you accept and pairing finishes, the person joins Contacts.

> [accordion] Does adding a contact put them in a Group?
>
> No. Adding someone to Contacts does not invite them to a [Group](https://developers.webai.com/using-webai/groups.md). An Admin adds them from that Group under **Share** after they are in Contacts.

> [accordion] What is the difference between a Persona and a contact?
>
> A **Persona** is a saved AI setup. A **contact** is a person you pair with so you can collaborate. See [Personas](https://developers.webai.com/using-webai/personas.md).

> [accordion] What does Remove do?
>
> **Remove** drops the pairing with that person, takes them off Contacts, and clears the conversation with them. Removals stay removed after a restart, and contacts added or deleted on another of your devices show up correctly everywhere. It does not remove them from a Group they already joined.
