# Ask your first question

> Open Chat, send a prompt, and apply a skill from the prompt window.

Chat is the first thing you see when you open webAI.

    You land on **Chat**: a prompt box with your recent conversations close at hand. Chat is the headline destination in the left sidebar.

  <Step title="Type a prompt and send">
    Your reply **streams in**. Every conversation is kept as a **thread** you can return to later from the Chat home or the sidebar.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Apply a skill">
    Click **+** in the prompt window and select a skill from the **skills dropdown** to shape how the run behaves.

  Prefer speaking? Click the **microphone** in the prompt window, say your question, then click **Send**. See [Chat](/using-webai/chat#voice-input) for details.

  Need current information from the web? Switch to **Online** in the prompt bar before you send, webAI searches the internet and includes citations in the answer. See [Chat](/using-webai/chat) for details.
