# Web search

> Let a Persona search the web and read result pages while it answers.

Web search lets a Persona look up current information and read result pages while it answers. It is built into webAI, so there is no account to connect. Add it to each Persona that should use it.

A web search sends your search query off this device to a search service. Leave web search off a Persona when you want that Persona to answer without it. See the [Privacy Policy](https://www.webai.com/privacy).

You ask in Chat. The model picks the tool. Tool names show in **Recent tool actions**. You do not type them.

## Add web search to a Persona

**1. Open Persona settings**

Click **Personas** in the left sidebar. On the list, open the card menu and click **Edit**. Or open the Persona, then click the settings icon.

**2. Add Web search**

Click **Abilities**. Under **Connectors**, click **Add**, then click **Add** on **Web search**.

**3. Ask in Chat**

Open that Persona and ask for something that needs current information. While it searches, the reply shows **Searching:** and your query, then **Reading sources…**. The answer can cite the pages it read.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Web search needs an internet connection. Without one, the Persona answers without searching.

To stop a Persona from searching, open **Abilities** again and uncheck **Web search** under **Connectors**.

> [!NOTE]
>
> **webAI Guide** searches the web without this step. It has no settings drawer.

## MCP calls

**web\_search** `read`

Searches the web for your query and returns matching pages with their titles and links, so the reply can cite them.
