# Local files

> Let a Persona find files on this Mac and quote what they say.

Local files lets a Persona find a document on this Mac by name or topic, then answer from short excerpts of the best matches. It is read-only. It does not create, move, change, or delete files. There is no account to connect. Add it to each Persona that should use it.

The search runs on this Mac and uses files Spotlight has indexed. The file names and excerpts it finds become part of the conversation. When a Persona answers with a cloud model, that model's provider receives them. See the [Privacy Policy](https://www.webai.com/privacy).

You ask in Chat. The model picks the tool. Tool names show in **Recent tool actions**. You do not type them.

## Add Local files to a Persona

**1. Open Persona settings**

Click **Personas** in the left sidebar. On the list, open the card menu and click **Edit**. Or open the Persona, then click the settings icon.

**2. Add Local files**

Click **Abilities**. Under **Connectors**, click **Add**, then click **Add** on **Local files**.

**3. Ask in Chat**

Open that Persona and describe the file you want, or ask a question about it. Name a folder, such as Documents or Downloads, to narrow the search to that folder. The reply uses the excerpts it found.

To stop a Persona from searching your files, open **Abilities** again and uncheck **Local files** under **Connectors**.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Local files needs a Tier 2 or higher Mac. See [System requirements](https://developers.webai.com/getting-started/system-requirements.md).

## MCP calls

**local\_file\_search** `read`
